Denver Comic Con Increases Staff and Programming for 2014

Denver Comic Con cosplay

Denver Comic Con and Literary Conference (DCC), a program of Comic Book Classroom (CBC) designed to help promote literacy through pop culture, today announced it will increase its volunteer force for the event by 300 percent and offer 300 hours of programming, up from last year’s 250 hours. The 3rd annual Denver Comic Con, held at the Colorado Convention Center on June 13 – 15, 2014, is expected to be one of the largest in the nation.

“As much fun as it’s been the first two years, we’re always striving to make Denver Comic Con better,” said Dr. Christina Angel, director, Denver Comic Con. “By putting the right people in the right positions we’re streamlining operations, and by adding more panels and speakers we’re delivering a world-class comic con and focusing on some things that set us apart—such as kids’ and under-20 programming.”

DCC promotes community arts and literacy at the con through its more than 300 hours of programming and the CBC Kids Corral, an 8,000-square-foot area providing educational, youth-based programming and fun activities for our younger attendees and their families. The Con is the major funding program of CBC, which applies its curricula in the community through schools and community organizations such as the Denver Public Library.

“Through our own experiences and listening to attendees, we’ve learned a lot during the past two years—and we’re applying what we’ve learned to this year’s Denver Comic Con,” said Dr. Angel. “For example, while lines are a part of any con, we’re working closely with the Convention Center to maximize line flow and adding efficiency to the badging process.”

“We encourage people to get signed up early,” said Beth Kovacs, Denver Comic Con’s volunteer director. “Volunteering with DCC is a lot of fun—our volunteers also have free access to the con the day of their shift—but it’s also a great resume builder for a lot of people. It’s not a surprise that most of the volunteers from years past are returning again for 2014.”

For more information about Denver Comic Con and to purchase tickets visit DenverComicCon.com.

Entering its third year, the DCC is Denver’s premiere fan experience, covering the worlds of comic books, film, and related media. World’s Leading Winemakers Descend on New Hampshire Next Week

Happy Woman Drinking Wine

In less than one week the biggest names in the wine world will flock to New Hampshire – not Napa Valley – for a week-long celebration of wine known as New Hampshire Wine Week. For the past 9 years New Hampshire Wine Week has attracted legends like Michael Mondavi, Cristina Mariani-May, Joel Peterson and Merry Edwards who participated in intimate wine dinners, exclusive panel discussions and tastings and the largest wine event in northern New England, the Winter Wine Spectacular. Dozens of wine industry titans, boutique vineyard owners and local producers will participate in the New Hampshire Liquor Commission’s 9th Annual New Hampshire Wine Week, which takes place January 27 – February 2. View a full list of celebrity appearances and register for events online at NHWineWeek.com.

“With dozens of intimate wine dinners in every corner of the state pairing delectable cuisine with fantastic wines, bottle signings, two exclusive wine discussions and tastings, and the Winter Wine Spectacular, Wine Week simply cannot be missed,” said Nicole Brassard Jordan, New Hampshire Liquor Commission Wine Marketing Specialist. “Only in New Hampshire will you be able to interact and learn directly from wine celebrities and sample a wide variety of wines. At some events, you can purchase the wines of your choice, and at the Winter Wine Spectacular attendees can pre-order their favorites with an exclusive show discount. Attendees can also use our all new, state-of-the-art web app with their smart phones.”

The New Hampshire Liquor Commission created Wine Week in 2005 after two great years of the Winter Wine Spectacular, the largest wine event north of Boston. This event gives customers the opportunity to sample some of the 7,000 wines available at New Hampshire’s 77 Liquor & Wine Outlets and allow them to meet with nationally and internationally acclaimed winemakers at dozens of events throughout the state.

“Wine Week taps into New Hampshire, and the region’s love of wine,” said Joseph W. Mollica, Chairman of the New Hampshire Liquor Commission. “With more than $273 million in wine sales last Fiscal Year, which marks a 7.3-percent increase from the previous year, New Hampshire is a significant player in the wine world. Our status draws the industry’s premier wine producers, who travel great distances each January to interact with our customers. The wine world has taken notice; New Hampshire is wine country.”

NHLC’s 9th Annual Wine Week features numerous events and celebrity bottle signings at select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets, celebrity wine dinners at some of New Hampshire’s leading restaurants and three signature events.

On Wednesday January 29th, NHLC will host two “Cellar Notes” series events, each featuring four elite wine experts for an educational tasting seminar, reception, bottle-signing and delicious hors d’oeuvres.

The Manchester Cellar Notes series will feature the following winemakers at the Puritan Backroom Event & Conference Center located at 245 Hooksett Road, Manchester, NH:

  • Rob Mondavi Jr. - President of Winemaking and Co-Founder, Folio Wine Partners & Michael Mondavi Family Estates
  • Joel Peterson – Winemaker, Ravenswood Winery
  • Farrah Felten- Jolley – Co-owner of Klinker Brick Winery
  • Cheryl Indelicato – Owner, Handcraft Artisan Collection

Due to the success of last year’s Cellar Notes series a second event has been added for 2014. The Portsmouth Cellar Notes series will feature the following winemakers at the Portsmouth Harbor Events and Conference Center located at 100 Deer Street, Portsmouth, NH:

  • Michael Philips – Co-owner and CEO, Michael David Winery
  • Joseph Carr – Owner, Joseph Carr Wines
  • Janice Mondavi – Co-proprietor, Charles Krug Winery
  • Melissa Stackhouse – Vice-president / winemaking, J Vineyards & Winery

Wine Week culminates with the 11th Easter Seals Winter Wine Spectacular, the largest wine tasting in northern New England which takes place at the Radisson Hotel Manchester on Thursday, January 30th, from 6 to 9 p.m. Along with nearly 1,800 wines, the Winter Wine Spectacular features scrumptious local fare, a silent auction and raffle, the Bellman Cellar Select VIP tasting room, and the chance to meet and learn from more than 50 wine personalities. This marquee event drew a sold-out crowd of 1,500 people last year. The 2014 Winter Wine Spectacular will be hosted in the Radisson Hotel’s ballroom and Armory.

The New Hampshire Liquor Commission has launched a unique, one-of-a-kind web app that will enable visitors to use their mobile devices, phones or tablets, to explore the various wine products, make tasting notes, and even order their favorite selections from the event. The checkout process will allow the user to modify selections, select one of the 77 convenient store locations to pick up their order, and take full advantage of the 15% discount on the purchase of 6-11 bottles, or even 20% on 12 or more bottles.

The Winter Wine Spectacular raises much-needed funds for Easter Seals New Hampshire, which provides exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities.

“Proceeds from the Winter Wine Spectacular directly support our early intervention program,” said Christine Pederson, director of events and corporate relations with Easter Seals New Hampshire. “This statewide program provides much-needed services and therapy for hundreds of children ages three months to three years with a variety of developmental delays and physical disabilities. Studies have shown that these early intervention programs can help many children from needing support later in life.”

Tickets for the Grand Tasting cost $65 per person, and tickets providing access to the Grand Tasting and Bellman’s Cellar Select cost $125 per person.

“Wine Week is a week for everyone who enjoys wine,” Brassard Jordan said. “With so many wines to choose from in New Hampshire, wine can be overwhelming. That’s why Wine Week is such a great time to get out there, try something new, learn about its origins and appreciate all the great wines New Hampshire has to offer, from local and international wineries.”

The Macallan Six Litre Decanter of M Scotch Achieves a New World Record Price

The Macallan M by LALIQUE

Today saw the sale of a stunning rare 6 litre “Imperiale” version of the highly sought after Macallan M – the world’s most sophisticated single malt whisky, contained within a beautifully designed and meticulously crafted crystal decanter, for US$628,000 / GBP£381,620 at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.

M represents a masterpiece created from the collaboration between three masters of their crafts; Fabien Baron, Founder and Creative Director of Baron & Baron, Silvio Denz, President and CEO of LALIQUE and Bob Dalgarno, Whisky Maker at The Macallan.

To celebrate the conception of M and its global launch in Hong Kong, four 6-litre Imperiale decanters were specially crafted by LALIQUE for The Macallan. These are the largest decanters ever made by LALIQUE. Each decanter required the work of 17 craftsmen, including two with the prestigious title, “Meilleur Ouvrier de France”, with each taking over 50 hours to complete.

Of the four, two will be archived by The Macallan and one has been committed to a private collector in Asia. The fourth, Constantine (named, as are the other three, after Roman emperors), uniquely features the engraved autographs of the three principal creators – LALIQUE/Silvio Denz, Fabien Baron and Bob Dalgarno. This highly collectable creation was made available as part of the Finest and Rarest Wines and The Macallan auction by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on Saturday, 18 January 2014.

David Cox of The Macallan commented : We are absolutely delighted at the generosity of the successful bidder of the “M” 6L decanter Constantine in securing such a wonderful contribution to a number of Hong Kong charities and at the same time setting a new world record for The Macallan. It is testimony to the craft, quality and passion underpinning the creation of this great decanter. It is a very proud moment for us”.

The Macallan is one of the world’s most sought after and collectable whiskies, sitting at the top of the auction index for whiskies and holding the current Guinness World Record™ for the most expensive whisky ever sold at auction, in 2010 in New York, The Macallan 64 years old in LALIQUE Cire Perdue at US$460,000 / GBP£288,000.

Silvio Denz of LALIQUE said, “This new world record at US$628,000 / GBP£381,620 highlights the uniqueness of the decanter and the remarkable quality of The Macallan single malt. Its creation is a tremendous achievement due to the unprecedented size, weight and completely new shape. After the Guinness World Record achieved by The Macallan in LALIQUE Cire Perdue in 2010 at Sotheby’s New York, this exceptional figure underscores the interest and value of such extraordinary decanters”.

Robert Sleigh of Sotheby’s Hong Kong, “The Macallan M decanter 6 litre Imperiale brought global interest from bidders who were attracted by the combination of the unique opportunity and exceptional quality bringing a new world record for single malt whisky as well as benefiting Hong Kong charities.

All net sale proceeds will be donated to a host of local charities in Hong Kong.

New Film Celebrates the Upcoming 80th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Federal Art Project

Jackson Pollock painting
Jackson Pollock

Connecticut-based independent film makers Michael Maglaras and Terri Templeton of 217 Films announce their new film project celebrating the 80th anniversary of “Federal Project Number One” – the initiative that launched the Federal Art Project in 1935 and put thousands of creative people to work across America.

The film is titled “Enough to Live On: The Art of the WPA” and is scheduled for release in February 2015.

As the effects of the Great Depression swept the American nation, with millions out of work and a national sense of despair, the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt adopted a novel idea: to put painters, sculptors, photographers, and writers, as well as actors and dancers, to work, and to place them on the government payroll.

On May 6, 1935, FDR signed Executive Order 7034, creating the Works Progress Administration...and on August 2, 1935, “Federal Project Number One” was created.

As some Americans went back to work under the WPA, among those workers included painters as diverse as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Marsden Hartley; photographers such as Berenice Abbott; actors such as Orson Welles; and writers such as Saul Bellow and Zora Neale Hurston.

The result of paying creative Americans to work at what they did best resulted in an explosion of new art throughout the country and has had a lasting influence, 80 years later, on the way Americans view themselves and view the role of government in the support of the arts and in the furtherance of a civil society.

More about 217 Films:

217 Films is an independent film company devoted to the American artistic experience. In 2005, Michael Maglaras and Terri Templeton released their first film “Cleophas and His Own” about the American painter Marsden Hartley's epic narrative of love and loss. Maglaras both directed and played the role of Hartley in this film. In 2008, they released a second film about Hartley called “Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet” – the first-ever documentary on the life of Hartley. In 2010, with their film “John Marin: Let the Paint be Paint!” they established, through the first full-length documentary on this important painter, that John Marin was one of the fathers of American Modernism. These films, among other distinctions, have been shown to acclaim at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

In 2012, they released “O Brother Man: The Art and Life of Lynd Ward.” Their most recent film, “The Great Confusion: The 1913 Armory Show” was released in September 2013 and is currently on tour across the United States.

The Sacramento Bee called Michael Maglaras a film maker of “Bergman-like gravitas.” His films have been described as “virtuoso filmmaking” (National Gallery of Art) “alive and fresh” (Art New England) and “elegiac and insightful” (Naples Daily News). David Berona, author of “Wordless Books” has said of “O Brother Man” -- “This film is stunning.” A recent review in The Dartmouth said of “The Great Confusion” that “Michael Maglaras...brought the drama of the original show back to life.”

All-Inclusive Belize Vacations On the Rise For 2014

The Spa of The Lodge at Chaa Creek in Belize

All-Inclusive Belizean Vacation packages are becoming increasingly popular this year, according to The Lodge at Chaa Creek, and the Belizean eco-resort’s general manager said several reasons for this trend have recently emerged.

Lucy Fleming, who with her husband Mick turned their family farm into Belize’s first eco resort some 30 years ago, said that factors such as time management, security and value for money are some of the reasons driving the popularity of all-inclusive vacation packages in Belize.

"Since we first began offering all-inclusive vacation packages they've grown steadily more popular, but there has been a noticeable surge in the last few years, and recent feedback from our guests shows why," Ms Fleming said.

"One reason commonly given is that people want to make the most of their holiday time, and rather than micro-manage every aspect of their vacation, they’re happier to leave it to local professionals whom they trust.

"Another reason we hear is safety and security. With an all-inclusive vacation, travelers are looked after from the moment they are picked up at the international airport until we drop them back off, and this translates into a more attractive, carefree experience," Ms Fleming said.

All-inclusive vacation packages also offer better value as opposed to itemizing and paying for each aspect of a vacation, Ms Fleming said.

"At Chaa Creek, for example, we’re situated in the midst of a private 365 acre nature reserve on the banks of the Macal River in Belize, and over the years have been able to develop a wide variety of features, such as miles of well-maintained trails, stables, canoes, an educational Belize Natural History Centre, butterfly farm, infinity pool, our Hilltop Spa and fine dining restaurant and lounge. And being located in the heart of the ancient Maya civilisation, we have over 70 recorded Maya archaeological sites within our property, as well as a Maya medicinal plant trail, Maya organic farm and an ancient temple.

"All of this has been developed over the years, so that now we’re often referred to as Belize’s ‘destination within a destination’, offering an array of tours and activities such as cultural and nature walks as well as birding with professional guides, which means our guests can enjoy a complete Belize holiday without leaving Chaa Creek."

Ms Fleming said that overall improvements in Belize’s tourism infrastructure, such as the recent addition of a nearby airstrip with regular flights to Belize’s Caribbean coast, islands and the western hemisphere’s largest barrier reef and atolls have also made the resort’s all-inclusive "Rainforest to Reef" vacation packages more popular.

"It’s now possible to wake up in the midst of a pristine tropical rainforest and then spend your afternoon snorkelling in the clear Caribbean waters off one of our colleagues’ beaches, and all for one set price that includes everything from accommodation to meals, transfers and even staff gratuities.

"With everything arranged by professionals with an intimate knowledge of the country, and no surprises or hidden costs, all-inclusive packages make for a very secure vacation with one affordable upfront cost, and couples, families, groups and individuals are responding very positively to this," she said.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is an award winning eco resort located in a 365 acre private nature reserve in Belize.

Saison de Wench Latest Seasonal Beer from Bison Brewing

Saison de Wench Latest Seasonal Beer from Bison Brewing

After turning his ever-popular Honey Basil Ale into a year-round offering, Bison Brewing’s brewmaster, Daniel Del Grande, was challenged to replace it with an equally interesting seasonal brew. Del Grande turned to his Director of Awesomeness, Ashley Routson (aka “The Beer Wench”) for inspiration. Together, they created Saison de Wench––a farmhouse ale brewed with botanicals.

“It might sound like a modern-day concept, but people have been brewing with flowers and herbs for thousands of years,” explains Routson. “Hops are actually the more contemporary flavoring agent.”

“Herbs, like basil and lemongrass, have been a major part of Bison’s brewing history since we started in 1989,” boasts Del Grande. “I welcomed the opportunity to continue this tradition with Saison de Wench.”

Using Bison’s gold medal award-winning farmhouse ale recipe as the base, Saison de Wench features a botanical blend of organic roses, organic hibiscus and organic lemongrass—each strategically added in various stages throughout the brewing process, including the mash.

“We put all of the hibiscus in the mash in order to extract as much flavor and color as possible. The lemongrass and roses were added in the whirlpool to capture otherwise volatile aromas,” notes Del Grande. “The result is pink-hued, refreshingly tart and slightly fruity ale with a bright floral nose and spicy, dry finish.”

Saison de Wench will make its grand debut the 2nd week of February on draft and in stylishly sleek, yet gender-neutral pink 4-packs. “As with all my beers, the packaging showcases the main ingredients––which, in this particular case, are pink,” explains Del Grande. “It’s not meant to attract or alienate either gender.”

“No one else has put a beer into pink carriers,” says Routson. “From a marketing perspective it’s quite original and, dare I say, brilliant.”

Saison de Wench will officially release during San Francisco Beer Week. Official release party is TBD.

Dona Paula Wines of Trinchero Family Estates Launches Estate Black Edition Red Blend

Dona Paula Wines of Trinchero Family Estates Launches Estate Black Edition Red Blend

Doña Paula Wines today announced the launch of a ‘Black Edition’ Red Blend from Mendoza, Argentina under the brand’s Estate tier of wines. This inaugural red blend joins a highly-lauded line-up of four varietals from the Estate tier, including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Torrontés, all grown and produced in Argentina.

One of Argentina’s largest exporters of premium wines, Doña Paula currently exports to more than 60 countries. The ‘Black Edition’ Red Blend is comprised of 60% Malbec, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Petite Verdot, grown on the El Alto Estate in the Luján de Cuyo region of Argentina, over 3,400 feet above sea level. The 2012 ‘Black Edition’ Red Blend will be distributed nationally and is priced at $14.99.

“Our ‘Black Edition’ Red Blend is well-balanced and complex and at the crossroads where power meets finesse,” commented head viticulturist Martín Kaiser, “and the eye-catching, new package, sets this special blend apart.”

The Doña Paula winemaking team has been scouring Argentina, since the brand’s conception, to find the right vineyards to produce the refined wines their consumers love and expect. Today, Argentinean Red Blends are up 84%, the second fastest growing varietal after Moscato and Argentina is the fastest growing country of origin, up 16%*. “We are proud to add this new wine to our portfolio and certain our fans will enjoy it as much as we do,” added Kaiser.

The 2012 Doña Paula ‘Black Edition’ Red Blend underwent cold pre-fermentation maceration to extract primary aromas and was aged in French Oak barrel for 10 months. The wine has an intense black, purple color in the glass and offers aromas of plum, spice, and red pepper. In the mouth, the wine has round tannins and a long finish. The Doña Paula winemaking team recommends pairing it with beef, lamb, game meat, pasta and risotto.

Colonizing Mars Contest Launched by The Millennium Project

surface of Mars
Would the first baby born here technically be a Martian?

Going to Mars has been the dream of many people for ages and might soon become a reality. National governments of several countries (including China, the European Union, India, Japan, Russia, and the USA) and private initiatives (such as MarsOne, SpaceX, and Virgin Galactic) have plans for both manned and unmanned trips to Mars in the 2020s and 2030s.

To bring this spirit of space exploration to Venezuela, the Venezuela Node of The Millennium Project and the Venezuela Chapter of the World Future Society are launching a nationwide contest for university students to consider ideas for going to and colonizing Mars. The details of this prize called “Sowing the Future”, in memory of the famous Venezuelan intellectual Arturo Uslar Pietri, will be announced at the Wayra Academy in Caracas, on January 29, 2014.

José Luis Cordeiro, representing both The Millennium Project and the World Future Society, will explain the details of this competition, which will include scholarships to travel to the 2014 annual meeting of the World Future Society in Orlando, Florida, where the students will meet some of the famous futurists in the world, including experts who have worked in the Apollo missions. The winners might also go to EPCOT Center and the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, where they can experience more of the future technologies. Gustavo Reyes, Executive Director of Wayra in Venezuela, says that “it is important to help young people to dream, and to dream big. Small dreams do not take people anywhere, but big dreams can take you to Mars, and beyond”.

Besides the prize announcements, José Luis Cordeiro will also present the Global Futures Intelligence System developed by The Millennium Project, and the Spanish version of the latest best-seller by Ray Kurzweil, "How to Create a Mind," whose preface he has written. Cordeiro explains that “serious thinking about manned and unmanned travel includes considering collaboration between humans, robots and other artificial intelligence. It is important to keep in mind possible outcomes like HAL in '2001: A Space Odyssey'."

The Millennium Project is a global participatory think tank connecting 50 Nodes around the world that identify important challenges in their regions, and initiate and conduct futures-related special research, workshops, symposiums, and advanced training. Its mission is to improve thinking about the future and make it available through a variety of media for feedback to accumulate wisdom about the future for better decisions today. It produces the annual "State of the Future" reports, the "Futures Research Methodology" series, the Global Futures Intelligence System (GFIS), and special studies. The forthcoming 2013-2014 State of the Future will be available by the end of January 2014.

The World Future Society is a nonprofit educational and scientific organization in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, founded in 1966. The society investigates how social, economic and technological developments are shaping the future. It seeks to help individuals, organizations, and communities to observe, understand and respond to social change appropriately and investigates the effects of applying anticipatory thinking to society. Script for Star Wars Episode VII is Complete

R2D2 and C-3PO

While on a press tour to promote his new TV series Believe, J.J. Abrams confirmed recently that the script for Star Wars Episode VII is complete.

"We're working really hard and we've got our script and we're in deep prep...full steam ahead, y'know" he was quoted as saying.

It was also revealed that Abrams will be shooting the movie on real film and that he will not be using IMAX cameras.

The endless speculation on casting continues, but it's hardly worth mentioning since no-one really knows. Best to wait for some official announcements in that regard.

Stair Sainty Gallery Showcasing Cuban Born Painter Federico Beltrán-Masses Returning to Florida after 90 Years

Federico Beltran Masses

After moving to Barcelona to study, King Alfonso XIII of Spain attended an exhibition of Beltrán-Masses’s in Madrid and became an early patron of the artist. Beltrán moved to Paris in 1918 and then exhibited at the XII Venice Biennale in 1920, in a pavilion dedicated solely to his work. There it earned the artist praise: critic Camille Mauclair described Beltrán’s talent as ‘like Veronese, like Tiepolo, like Tintoretto… a picture is lyrical drama.’

Reports of Beltrán’s fame reached the United States by 1921; a paragraph in American Art News mentioned the success of Beltrán’s first Paris exhibition, and in 1924 the painter was invited to exhibit at the Wildenstein galleries in New York City. A sell-out exhibition in Palm Beach, and show in Los Angeles followed in 1925. Such was Beltrán’s fame a year later that Martha Graham titled a dance in her first public performance in New York Portrait – Beltrán-Masses.

Beltrán-Masses found favor in Hollywood too, where he painted portraits of screen legends Gloria Swanson, his great friend Rudolph Valentino, of Joan Crawford and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Beltrán painted or sold his work to some of the most renowned personalities of the Golden Age of Hollywood including Charlie Chaplin, newspaper columnist Louella Parsons, actress Marion Davies as well as her lover William Randolph Hearst (who purchased four paintings by the artist and whose portrait he painted).

Whilst Beltrán’s portrait subjects included the Kings of England and Spain, Princes and Princesses, Hollywood stars, and society on both sides of the Atlantic, he was particularly sought out by women who rejected convention. We will show in Miami a portrait of aviator and socialite Mme. Bonnardel, Countess Montgomery, whose Chanel dress is in the Met Costume Institute, and a portrait of the Fashion icon Marquesa Luisa Casati.

Born in Cuba and raised in Cuba and Barcelona, the painter’s Hispanic heritage would influence his oeuvre throughout his career across the globe. Beltran painted enigmatic, languorously posed women and nudes, often in nocturnal settings characterized by their nocturnal light and open starry skies. These allegorical paintings are rich with musical and poetic references and like his friend, the painter Kees van Dongen, Beltrán captured the escapism that characterized post-First World War society and the Jazz age.

Further information, JPEG images and a 180-page catalog on the artist is available upon request from the gallery:

Breckenridge Brewery Release New Spring Seasonal Named Ophelia

Breckenridge Ophelia

Breckenridge Brewery will ring in 2014 with a new spring seasonal, Ophelia. Like its namesake from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this beer is sweet and innocent. The unique hoppy wheat beer weighs in at 5% ABV (alcohol by volume) and offers a refreshing crispness with tropical fruit whispers. It’s worth noting, however, that unlike Shakespeare’s character, Ophelia, there’s no tragic ending with this beer. Quite the opposite, the beer’s light and hoppy finish leaves you wanting another.

“Craft beer is all about diversity, of course” explains Todd Usry, Breckenridge Brewery’s Brewmaster and Director of Brewing Operations. “Strong, complex, flavorful beers have made the craft industry what it is today, but there’s a growing desire for interesting and sophisticated, equally flavorful, session beers. That’s what we want to present with Ophelia – an approachable new beer, accessible by many.”

Ophelia hits the palate with a slightly aggressive hoppiness that’s balanced with light, fruit flavors. Subtle hints of mango, papaya, and guava round out the aroma of Mosaic and Palisade hops. Malted white wheat lends the fullness people expect in a craft beer, even a lighter one. Ophelia joins Avalanche, Vanilla Porter, Agave Wheat, Oatmeal Stout and SummerBright in Breckenridge Brewery’s line of session beers at 5% ABV or less.

The brewery’s complete portfolio runs the gamut from strong, hoppy beers like 471 Double IPA and strong, malty beers like Christmas Ale and Autumn Ale down to its session beers. Its small batch, barrel aged, and nitro programs bring additional variety to its offerings.

Ophelia will hit the market in 6-packs and kegs in early January everywhere Breckenridge Brewery beer is sold, and it will be available as the brewery’s spring seasonal through April.

About Breckenridge Brewery:

Breckenridge Brewery was founded in 1990 in Breckenridge, Colorado. In the past two decades Breckenridge Brewery has grown from a small 3,000-barrels-a-year brewpub to one of the most successful craft beer and restaurant companies in the nation. It now handcrafts more than 52,000 barrels of fresh beer annually and owns and operates five brewpubs and ale houses in the state of Colorado. For more information visit BreckBrew.com.

The Macallan Masters of Photography Features Japanese Artist Daido Moriyama

The Macallan Remix

To celebrate Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama and acknowledge his contribution to the art of photography, The Macallan will launch The Macallan Masters of Photography: Capsule Edition: Daido Moriyama – Remix, Remixed.

This limited edition offering of only 500 bottles, exclusive to Asia Travel Retail, features a remix of Daido Moriyama work from his renowned book of the same name “Remix” along with some other specially selected material. Each specially bound book, which includes a series of inspired French fold pages, has been hand signed by the photographer himself. The aim was to showcase his impactful style by bringing it to a wider audience, pairing it with a one-off cask strength single malt Scotch whisky from The Macallan.

The whisky chosen by The Macallan’s Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno brings alive the subtleties of the photographers work. Matured in a first fill sherry seasoned oak cask (cask no. 15,245), the whisky is indulgent and sumptuous, and showcases the dark character of The Macallan (58.9% ABV). Measuring 75 on The Macallan colour scale this is one of the darkest single casks ever released and is priced at $1,750 (USD).

Ken Grier, Director of Malts at Edrington, commented: “We took our inspiration for this capsule edition of The Macallan Masters of Photography following an exclusive event by Daido Moriyama, supported by The Macallan at The Tate Modern, entitled ‘Menu’. 350 guests gathered and selected their personal menu of Daido Moriyama’s photographs which were then bound into a silk screened book cover and signed by Daido.

“This made such an impression that we were moved to further celebrate his work by creating a very distinctive limited edition. We felt passionately about capturing Moriyama’s challenging perspective and style. His influence over the photographic world in both Japan and the rest of the world has been profound and we’re relishing marking his life and work with this latest release.”

Tasting Notes: Daido Moriyama – Remix, Remixed (58.9% ABV)

80% of World Leaders Now on Twitter

Barack Obama and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner

The Digital Policy Council (DPC) released its fourth annual ranking of world leaders' use of the social media website Twitter.com. DPC's latest report indicates continued but decelerated growth in the number of heads of state on this medium. In 2013, 80% or 4 out of 5 world leaders were using Twitter. This figure represents a growth of 8% over 2012 contrasting sharply with the upsurge of 78% between 2011 and 2012.

Top 10 World Leaders who Tweet

President Obama of the United States continues to occupy the #1 spot, gaining 16 million followers in just one year, due to the president's popularity and comfort with social media. A noticeable upturn occurred during the U.S. government shutdown in the fall of 2013 as Obama, politicians and citizens alike tweeted their frustrations about the situation.

The most dramatic debut was the rocketing ascent of Indonesian leader President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY for short) to the #2 spot. SBY joined Twitter in 2013, and quickly gained 4.2 million followers. As the leader of the most populous Islamic country, SBY shares candid and personal opinions in an effort to strengthen democracy at home and throughout the region.

Venezuela was another big mover, slumping from #2 to #13. The passing of the popular Hugo Chávez triggered the drop, although Chávez's successor, President Nicolas Maduro was immediately accepted, entering the ranking in the Top 15.

The greatest upward movement among the top 10 was that of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. He jumped from #10 last year to #7 in 2013. Sheikh Mohammed's followers increased by 1 million to 2.4 million, an indication that his openness to different cultures and public dialog resonates with UAE citizens and residents who, Sheikh Mohammed says, "continually arise to the occasion whenever approached to contribute to innovative ideas."

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina moved up one spot to #6. Fernández's preference to communicate with the public directly via social media rather than traditional press conferences is prophetic of how leaders will leverage Twitter in the future.

Who are the Holdouts?

With 80 percent saturation among world leaders on Twitter, the profile of holdouts warrants examination.

Political leaders in China, the world's most populous country, remain absent on social media. Twitter has been blocked since 2009, and while China does have its own micro-blogging platform, called Sina Weibo, it is strictly regulated by government censors. U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron opened a Weibo account prior to his visit to China in 2013 prompting calls for President Xi Jinping to follow suit.

More surprising is the European democracies that do not utilize Twitter, with Denmark and Sweden as notable examples. In fact, no European leaders are even represented in the Top 10. Perhaps more apparent are the leaders of politically unstable governments who simply shun social media or jumped onto Twitter only to let their accounts go dormant.

Indeed, according to DPC's analysis, 67% of the countries that utilize Twitter were politically stable, indicating that leaders confident in their political legitimacy are most apt to utilize social media.

In 2014, the DPC expects penetration on Twitter for world leaders to rekindle and reach 90 percent, with leaders ultimately realizing how to employ Twitter effectively as a means of strategic communications — an insight seized by Iran's newly-elected President Hassan Rouhani who became active on Twitter in 2013 for international relations even though the site is blocked in his own country.
